A. Rights as smokers? What rights? If you want to kill yourselves that's one thing, but you don't have a right to expose everyone else to your vice. Second-hand smoke is dangerous and can cause cancer.

Will California have to give smokers their rights back?
Q. The governor is considering taxing golfers and pet care to raise money for the state treasury. Now (tongue in cheek) if the smokers had not been made so politically incorrect, maybe the tax coffers would not be so empty. Smokers always paid a lot of taxes on their smokes.

A. There is certainly a point there. If they hate cigarettes so much, why not just outlaw them? Must be some reason for keeping them around. *

Do you think a state wide smoke ban, is infringing on smokers rights?

Do you get irritated by smokers complaining about their rights?
Q. Does anyone else get really irritated by smokers who constantly whinge on about their rights? Don't you wish they would realise that there are other people in the world and that their choices are having an impact on our health... Do we not have a choice about whether we breathe in second hand smoke and whether we get in a car crash because someone was smoking and dropped ash on their leg... All I want to do is spin round in circles with my favourite sword, but somehow people say that this infringes on THEIR rights. How about my right to swing a deadly weapon around in a public place? If people don't want to be in a place where there are blades flying around, then those people should stay away from me!! what rights and duties do smokers have towards non- smokers?
Q. do smokers have any rights? legal or moral? what responsibilities do they have?
Asked by lisa t - Wed Apr 9 12:20:25 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The only legal responsibilities smokers have is to not smoke in designated nonsmoking areas. And to put our butts in ashtrays or the trash when we're done. As for moral, well...as obnoxious as most nonsmokers I have been around can be, I'd say none. While I admit it is possible to get cancer and other ugly diseases from secondhand smoke, you'd have to breathe it every day for decades. Just passing by the smoking section or catching a whiff of smoke on the wind outside is not gonna do it. Personally, the only time I'll put out my cigarette is when I'm asked to do so POLITELY, or when I'm around someone that either has lung problems or recently quit smoking themselves.

A. Smoker: Don't light up in areas designated "non-smoking". Non-smoker: unless a smoker is lighting up in a non-smoking area, shut up. ALL people have equal rights. Smoking is not a "rights" issue anymore than any other personal choice like consuming alcohol or eating high-fat foods. People should just mind their own business about the smoking issue.

A. I ama smoker as well and i understand how they could take some of these priviladges away (for the safety of others) if smoking is my choice than let me smoke. an idea that i had a while back was to try and get smoking rooms in certain places. just a ventalated heated room. but the number of petitioners needed to get this was out rageous. also we would have to pay for useage of this room. there is no way to say we will never get our rights back but in some places it will be nearly impossible. it is hard when the govt. continually takes away our rights as americans but this also explain how corupt our society is.

Q. Is it not unfair to stop smokers from smoking in restaurants but allow drinkers to drink? Are the drinkers not just as much a menace if not more than smokers once they get up from that table and drive off after drinking several? It's just not fair! Holiday parties and smokers "rights"?
Q. With people attending parties for the holidays, it is inevitable that a smoker will be attending. As the host/hostess of the party, are you prepared to protect your other guests by asking this person to smoke outside (hiding any ashtrays)? Some smokers think they have the "right" to smoke in the presence of others, they do not. They don't have the right to harm another health, and it has been proven that second hand smoke is harmful to those nearby. How do you handle smokers?
Asked by MadforMAC - Wed Dec 19 12:55:51 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If you host a party and know for a fact this may be an issue, provide an out of doors area with an over hang to protect from rain or snowfall. Then inform all your guests ahead of time a smoking area will be provided. OR inform your guests that smoking is prohibited unless they choose to smoke outside at least 15 feet from the door (law in some states).

Why do smokers keep banging on about their rights!?
Q. What about the rights of a non smoker to enjoy clean air in pubs and enclosed spaces! Let's face it, I can stand next to a drinking alcholic without my health being affected at all, but if I stand next to someone who is chain smoking I am forced to breath in their harmful smoke! The ban is not aimed at taking enjoyment away from smokers, it's aimed at protecting the lives of the people who have to breath in their smoke. and please...Don't say that non smokers have the right to stay out of pubs. They have a right to go out and enjoy ourselves too!!! Well, now in the UK smokers have a right to stay at home and smoke themselves to death. They don't have to go out and fill our public places with smoke anymore! I can't wait for July 1st!! [cont.]

No humann rights for smokers?
Q. I just read an article about how there is no human rights for smokers and how they are treated so unfairly. Im not a smoker i think its beyond disgusting. I dont mind people smoking themselves as long as i dont have to be affected by it. I agree that the smoking ban is pubs is wonderfull. What some of the smokers are forgetting is people who dont smoke have rights too. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? what about the human rights of non smokers not to be hurt by the smoke

A. I'm not a smoker (gave up 10 years ago). Smokers seem to be stigmatised these days & that's a shame. I know the health risks with smoking and with passive smoking. I agree that it's healthier not to smoke & to ban smoking in highly populated public places. However, I see no reason for the general derogatory attitude which has arisen toward smokers. Smokers are seen by a lot of people to be "bad" and "sad" people. It seems that attitude has motivated more restrictions to be placed on them because they are seen as deserving less respect as human beings than non-smokers. Extra: Why the thumbs down? It's true, and it's an unethical way to treat people.

Why do US smokers think they are entitled to any rights?
Q. Smokers in the U.S. think they have the right to pollute the air that other's breathe, and that it's okay to endanger other's lives despite soaring healthcare costs. Why is that?

A. Just plain selfishness, denial, and addiction. It would be like drunk drivers saying they have the right to drink and drive.

do you agree with smokers rights?
Q. do you think that people have the right to smoke wherever they want, or do you agree with restrictions?

A. I think everyone has the right to fresh non-toxic air, smokers can smoke anywhere and anytime as long as they don't infringe on the rights of other people to have their fresh air. Kind of like: I think everyone has the right to swing their arms, but I think everyone has the right to not get punched in the face, which means the right to swing your arms stops at my face. .
